About three hours of training videos, a fair amount of texts, and several quizzes later, I’m beginning to understand my mission at the Olympic Games. After all, so far, I’ve only been told that I would be taking care of the VIPs, which was rather vague information. During a video conference in August of last year with a representative from Paris24, where my language skills were primarily tested and we constantly switched between French and English, the French sports minister was mentioned as an example of someone who might need to be looked after.

Paris around noon. I’m standing in a long line. The distribution of the Olympic uniforms for volunteers has begun. I’m surprised at how long the line is. After all, precise time slots were assigned. Nevertheless, an estimated 400 people have gathered in front of the entrance to an exhibition hall in the south of Paris on Avenue Ernest Renan.

The most important task of a volunteer is probably to answer questions to ensure a smooth daily routine and to guarantee a pleasant visit for both visitors and athletes. Even during my first video conference—let’s call it the "job interview"—I admitted that I currently couldn’t answer a single question. The "Académie 2024" is supposed to remedy this.

Yesterday, as previously announced and still in good time, I received my schedule for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Of course, one feels honored and almost privileged to be involved in such a major event. Fortunately, I received the schedule while sitting down, so I only had to get my gasping under control.
